<br />
I had the great honour and privilege to work as producer on what would be Sandy Stubbert's final work. It has taken some time since Sandy's passing to complete the project, but it is now finally here. Sandy poured her heart and soul into this album, and this music deserves to be heard!<br />
<br />
We had planned to have an album release/memorial concert at The Mansion in Kingston for April 10th, but due to COVID-19, that proved impossible. The plan was to raise money from the album release for community mental health and musician support organizations. Seeing as the need for financial support is greater than ever, we've decided to go ahead with the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A247620_34131743_20094451_lnk1000&utm_campaign=fanreach&utm_content=1000&utm_medium=email&utm_source=fr_layout_44&rn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gofundme.com%2Ff%2Fsandystubbert">GoFundMe</a> release. <br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/sandystubbert">https://www.gofundme.com/f/sandystubbert</a><br />
<br />
Contributors to the campaign who give $20 or more will receive a CD or digital copy of Sandy's album.<br />
<br />
Please honour Sandy's memory by contributing to the <a href="http://www.rvrb.me/fan_reach/pt?eid=A247620_34131743_20094451_lnk1001&utm_campaign=fanreach&utm_content=1001&utm_medium=email&utm_source=fr_layout_44&rn_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.gofundme.com%2Ff%2Fsandystubbert">GoFundMe</a>.<br />
<br />
Proceeds from the sales of this album will be donated to two different organizations, AMHS-KFLA (Addiction and Mental Health Services, Kingston Frontenac Lennox and Addington) and MIKES (Music Industry Kingston Emergency Support).<br />
<br />
We miss you Sandy. May your music live on.<br />

<br />
<br />
<br />
Driftwood marks the fourth and final album from Sandy Stubbert.<br />
<br />
Sandy was a gifted musician and songwriter who readily left a lasting imprint on those she met.<br />
<br />
Her friend John MacDonald aptly describes Sandy's personality, "I worked with Sandy at Pakwash Junior Camp and reconnected with her on Facebook a couple of years ago. Then, as now, I was appreciative of her extraordinary passion for life which came through not only in her music, but in her genuine caring of those with whom she came in touch with. Her lasting friendship with her junior ranger sisters is a testament to the love she had for life."<br />
<br />
As many know, Sandy struggled from bipolar depression for many years. The "black dogs" as she called them, continually nipping at her heels. Although her mental illness had a profound effect on every area of her life, it did not define who she was; she soldiered on despite it.<br />
Most storms Sandy endured valiantly, however, the last storm overcame her. This album represents her new sunrise. A lasting legacy to her brilliant life.<br />

Calling on all of my friends and fans, I'm so excited to share with you the news of my impending album release. My eighth record! I think you guys are really going to dig this music. A bit of a shift in styles for me, more of a pop/indie vibe on some of the tracks. I'm very proud of how this record turned out. Muchos gracias to Zane Whitfield, Dylan Lodge, and Phil Bova for sculpting the sounds.</div>
<br style="box-sizing: inherit;" />And the band! Oh my God! It's a pure joy to hear the keyboard mastery of Tony Silvestri on this record. In his element, with Fender Rhodes and Hammond Organ as his tools. You can't beat those tones and the skill with which he manipulates those instruments.<br style="box-sizing: inherit;" /><br style="box-sizing: inherit;" />Anyone who has seen Bonz Bowering perform live know that the 'Animal' t-shirt he sometimes wears certainly befits his on stage persona. We did our best to capture some of his lightning in the recording bottle on this project. Ultimately, I was most impressed with his tasteful, thoughtful approach to the songs. Chills.<br style="box-sizing: inherit;" /><br style="box-sizing: inherit;" />My childhood friend, Seamus Cowan, rounds out the band. Seamus, a late bloomer by musical standards, came to my Mom's house in Westport at the age of 18, looking for bass guitar instruction. After showing him a couple of Led Zeppelin and Hendrix tunes, my most important instruction was to send him on to Zak Colbert (legendary Kingston bassist), where he soared to the depths of the low end. So happy to work with Seamus on a project after all these years. His tone and approach are amazing. Not to mention his impeccable harmony vocal work ( and one helluva scream!!).<br style="box-sizing: inherit;" /><br style="box-sizing: inherit;" />I've got an LA-based radio promo team ready to push the songs to stations across North America. I'm hiring a publicist to spread the word to the print media. This costs money. Lots of it! I need your help friends. You can pitch in to help the cause for as little as $5! <span style="line-height: 1.4;">https://www.gofundme.com/tomsavagealbum8</span></div>

Coming this Spring, the long-awaited debut album from Kingston's own Old-time Country ambassador, Al Duquette. It was an honour to work with Al on this project. He has one of the most authentic voices I've ever heard in Country music. In music period. You can hear the life experience ooze from his vocal cords. And the songs! Hank and Lefty would be proud!</div>

As a musician, I spend a lot of time on social media promoting my shows. More time than I would like truth be told. One of the biggest time sucking online tasks is inviting people to Facebook events. Anyone who has invited friends to a Facebook event knows this. You have to click on each person individually and scroll through to find friends to invite. For the touring musician, generally you want to invite only friends that are in the geographic location where the event is taking place. This can be a very long process. At one time I believe you could a plug-in on Chrome that would batch invite all of your friends (something I never did personally), but now Facebook has a limit on the number of friends you can invite ( probably because they want you to buy ads for the event instead).<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I found this process very boring and frustrating, so I set out to find a way to streamline the process. And I found it!!<br />
<br /></div>
<div>
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: right; margin-left: 1em; text-align: right;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><span style="clear: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><a href="https://searchisback.com/" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-MU_AV3eaBr4/Vv6C98iZPCI/AAAAAAAAA6U/PPLgJgjK3ugsIhApWcMSLW-9A1zIUj14A/s320/search%2Bis%2Bback.jpg" width="250" /></a></span></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://searchisback.com/" target="_blank"><br /></a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br /></div>
<div>
It turns out that back in the day, FB allowed users to search by geographic location, gender, age, and interests. Those options have since disappeared from the site( unless you are targeting an ad). Through my internet search efforts, I found a website that has recreated these search parameters for everyone to use. It's called <a href="https://searchisback.com/" target="_blank">Search is Back</a> , and man I tell you, it is great! Saves me so much time!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
You create your event, go to <a href="https://searchisback.com/" target="_blank">Search is Back</a>, and type the city/province/state you want to target, and all of your friends pop up that live in that area. Done!</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm so pleased to have found this site. It has opened up more time for me to create and rehearse my music. Which is what it is all about in the first place. Share this with your musician friends! They will thank you for it!<br />

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yet again.....my apologies to the readers. I had to run off on short notice after hearing of the terrible fortunes of the city of Paris. As you know, I am first a Frenchman. And so, naturally, I have relatives scattered about France...some being in Paris. Matter of fact - I am writing this from the other side of the Atlantic, and should return in the New Year...at some point.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What a holiday it has been! As I look at a crackling fire here within the comforts of a <i>chateau</i>, I feel a familiar warmth. That unique temperature provided by those, whom to....we are closest. So puzzling to realize in the same instant, why I am in fact here at home..... and therefore, what realities lie beyond a few wooden doors. Why should darkness be visited upon me and mine when I try to walk this earth in grace?</div>
<div>
Ahhh,....Christmas is a good time for reflection, non?</div>
<div>
What? Perhaps New Year's then?</div>
<div>
Regardless of the season, these are the cards we've been dealt mes amis...</div>
<div>
Ahhhh,...aces and spades...horse and cart....chicken and egg......old wine in new bottles...</div>
<div>
.................... .... ... .. . </div>
<div>
.....I just want a ticket for the bus to Hot Town...that's right....where the sand is hot, the music is hot, the women are warm, and the beer is cold....and the public hibachi runs on natural gas.....</div>
<div>
Ahhhh, ...you see how long I've been away....only a few short years ago I would have dreamt of fine wine and cheese, a loaf of bread, and the laughter of children.....should not something significant come from this time as it slides under our feet?</div>
<div>
.....Perhaps the only person at the airport who understands where we are going is the man playing music over the speakers... wait, there is no music in airports...but if there were...I'd like to hear some records by John Fahey - the american modern primitive. Player of American Primitive Guitar, and assorted jigs and benders.</div>
<div>
Anyone who enjoys folk musics, should find pleasure here. It is a kind of re-hash of some of the earliest recorded american popular music, mixed with "high art" ideals imported from Europe along with it's modern orchestral workings...along with a sitar...and maybe some dust from Tasmania.</div>
<div>
Regardless of the definition, it feels good to my ears and can be listened to under a variety of situations. There is simplicity here. Mastery of the steel-string guitar. And poetic composition, mixed with meditative rhythm and structure. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
John Fahey is yet another musician's musician who ended up with a rather short hand at the end of his relatively short life. Coming of age after the end of WWII, and living in the suburbs of Washington D.C, John Fahey discovered and pursued his music there on the east coast. John was his own Allan Lomax you might say - collecting and learning from old recordings. Imagine a white boy driving through the backroads of a southern U.S county during a time of turbulent racial relations, and knocking on doors of very humble homes to inquire whether they have any old records for sale. A man could get shot under such circumstances. Not surprisingly, John Fahey crossed paths with kindred spirits such as Mr. Joe Bussard. This fellow was/is a serious collector of '78's. Maybe the best. Besides record collecting, Bussard also had a recording studio and made some of the first recordings of Fahey in 1958. By 1959 though, John had founded his own label, <i>Takoma </i>records<i>.</i><br />
<br />
Eventually, John ended up at Berkley and then at UCLA in California when the sixties unfolded. There, he seems to have absorbed what he wanted from the culture around him, yet struck out on his own to examine music on his terms. It was during this period that, in addition to recording himself, John spent time searching for, and sometimes finding, long forgotten "recording artists", such as Bukka White, that he had heard via old '78's.... Once found, he would offer to record them once again.<br />
<br />
Fahey's discography is vast, spanning clear up to the year 2000. As a fair introduction, may I recommend 1965's "<i>The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death</i>". </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Divorce, drinking problems, health problems, medication, eventual poverty, living in a hotel.....</div>
<div>
Pawn guitars, sell rare records...then death.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
This is American Primitive Guitar played by a spiritual detective. In addition to the many albums John recorded, he wrote several books, and was even taken seriously as he tried his hand at painting. Not surprisingly, Fahey also became the subject of other creative types, with a documentary film having been made of his life. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What more can be said? Gitcha some.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Tonight there are two major disturbances in the GVA. The larger of the two, is the AC/DC show at the big pro-sports centre. The other, will be performing at one of the oldest operating music venues in Vancouver...<i>The Railway Club, </i>located on the corner of Dunsmuir and Seymour. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
As I walked south up Richards Street towards the <em>Holy Rosary Cathedral, </em>my attention was seized by it's ringing bells. While I stood there looking up towards the sound, I saw a flash in the periphery of my vision and turned to witness St. Elmo's Fire hop from the roof of Rogers Arena, down onto the trolley-bus cables of Dunsmuir street, and then creep past me, sizzling along the wires westward. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Whoooooa! Mercy!! <br />
Lightening can really grab your attention!<br />
After absorbing the magnitude of this phenomenon, I proceeded on to my destination.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
As I had never been to this institution previously, I was not sure of where to find it, but then there it was - a small entrance off Dunsmuir with a staircase leading to the second floor. I was plenty early to ensure I would catch both the feature, <i>Tom Savage</i>; and his guest-from-the-west, <i>Lola Parks</i>. Upon reaching the top of the stairs, I found myself at a poetry reading - which did not cause me concern. I thought to myself, <i>"Perhaps Tom has some additional artists on the bill?" </i> After all, Tom does write some beauty lyrics...so he must dig poetry... but no.... It's just coincidence. After some questioning of the bartender, I am instructed to go around the bar towards the opposite end of the building where I will find another stage - the North Stage.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
It is here in this small but impressive space, that the music will be performed tonight. And yes, I would call it impressive. Being on the second floor, and tucked into a corner, it is insulated from the sound of the street below. It feels cozy and has a nice shape and size conducive to intimacy with an audience. Also impressive, is the olfactory richness, a.k.a thick-stink-of-stale-beer...or is that rotting garbage? Hard to distinguish really.... But hey, a lot of beer can be splashed around in 84yrs of good times, non? So I'll let it slide. Ah wait, there's Mr. Savage now....and he's doing his own sound check, as the house guy just plain isn't here. But hey, if you want something done right - you might as well do it yourself, non? Ahhhh...the trials and tribulations...no person on earth escapes them mes amis. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
While enjoying an amber lager, I began to mix with some of the other early birds and was fortunate to speak with some very interesting members of the savage entourage, as well as Tom himself. Having left my portable dictation machine at home due to a damaged breast pocket, I am limited to only relaying an undetailed summary account of our conversation. Of particular note, we touched on the subject of the death of selling music as an album. Using an appropriate example, Tom pointed out how AC/DC's <i>Back in Black</i> was the 2nd biggest seller of all time, and how that same album today would not have a chance to make that kind of money for either the artist or the record company. Besides T-shirts, plastic devil horns, and ticket sales, music as a commodity is now pretty much irrelevant. Well.....for clarity's sake, let's listen in on a recent conversation between interviewer <i>Sarah Greene</i> and musician <i>Dave Rawlings</i> instead...</div>
<br />
<div>
<span style="color: #783f04;"><i>- Why did you call the new record Nashville Obsolete?</i></span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i><span style="color: #783f04;">- With the music we make, and the fact that we're in this old recording studio, and the equipment we use is largely obsolete and, you know, music as a commodity is obsolete - all of these things tied in. We had a little space in the bottom of the studio and we thought, "Oh, we should open a little storefront down there and call it Nashville Obsolete and sell things that people don't need" - typewriter ribbon, buggy whips, any number of things that have come and gone. Music has changed and we've changed. You could call me a "Nashville Obsolete" if you wanted to use it as a </span></i><i><span style="color: #783f04;">noun.</span></i> </div>
</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div style="background-color: white; text-align: center;">
<table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" style="height: 20px; width: 730px;"><tbody>
<tr><td><div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
It is now time for the music to begin, but I am in no hurry...I have been enjoying my conversations with both new and old friends. Lola Parks gingerly took to the freshly prepared stage and proceeded to flawlessly execute her set with grace. All the while contending with still lingering conversations and drink orders. For what it's worth, may I say it was a pleasure, and I wish her longevity in her career.<br />
An audience's attention is palpable. And while Lola did not succeed in capturing it...I would not say she was expected to either. Tom, on the other hand, immediately possessed the room like a force of nature. Presence. To turn ears on and mouths off is the name of the game. And Tom was on top of his game on all fronts. Refined songwriting. Engineered and evolved. Form and function without loosing organic origin. The smooth surfaces and radiused edges of a remarkable performance that flowed as water. Vocal chops that were never butchered and Guitarzan vines for swinging through the upper canopy. The whole nine yards and a bag of chips. I suppose that should come as no surprise as this gig could be viewed as the apex, both geographically and figuratively, of Mr. Savage's western Canadian tour. So, after hitting all the honky tonks in all those provinces and time zones, he get's to play a Tuesday night in Vancouver before turning east and doing it all over again. It ain't a Saturday - but who cares? We all came here tonight hoping to find what we as audience members have infact found, and that makes life real...on ANY night of the week.<br />
<br />
After holding us willingly captive and silent until midnight, the show was sadly over. I had enjoyed<br />
myself immensely to be sure. I slept well that evening, and dreamt of a night sky full of<br />
rhinestones instead of stars. Awakening the next day, I felt exactly three years younger and had a<br />
cancerous tumour fall out of my belly button while in the shower. I'd say I got my money's worth. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So...Nashville obsolete?</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Nah. Quality never goes out of style.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Diamond-in-the-rough?</div>

<br />
<br />
My apologies to the readers! It was only a short time after the posting of my last entry, that I found myself participating in the <em>Gastown Grand Prix</em> bicycle race. And it was in this race that I broke a handful of fingers over both hands. Meaning to say, that I have not been able to write nor type for some time. Mes amis, the short long version is that a renowned bicycle mechanic from Norway happened to be in town, and wanted me to test a new frame design prototype. The frame performed well...I however, did not. It was during a sharp corner that I changed my line suddenly to avoid a renegade dog turd which had found it's way onto the cobblestones. I low-sided and rang the handle bars, avec les mains, off of a pretty lamp post. I am fortunate to have recovered quickly, yes. But, one might also say I've been having hard times lately...<br />
<br />
During my recovery I discovered another musician who earned a spot in the tomb of the unknown soldier. <span style="font-size: x-small;"><em>Hmm, this might have to be a series...</em></span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-small;"><em> </em></span>What a story Baby Huey has. Dies at 26, has just one album to his credit, yet his influence is felt to this day. And if you want to learn more, then you can simply listen to that album of his...but...you must listen to the entire album...hey, it's the Baby Huey STORY eh. Ya gotta listen. Not that Baby Huey will tell you his story outright....but this is the only real snapshot of him we have....a few 45s aside. It's a dandy, produced by none other than Curtis Mayfield. A little psychedelic, a little blacksploitation, a lotta soul, and topped off with social message of a universal flavour. And of course, a few bits of scandal.<br />
Due to the unexpected and drug-addiction-aided death of the dearly departed, this album had to be finished and released posthumously. It was a busy autumn in 1970: Jimi, Sept 18th; Janis, Oct 4th; Baby Huey, Oct 28th. Mayfield made use of what tracks he had and probably filled in the spaces with some instrumental bits. This causes some to speculate as to how much Mayfield one is hearing and even what musicians might be playing on certain tracks. Also worth noting, is a story living in the old newspapers about Baby Huey's bereaved mother winning the right to look at the financial books of a certain record company. But, besides all of that, there are a lot of good vibes to be heard.....Oh yes, ....and many Hip-Hop artists have sampled stuff off this album... and some of them consider Baby Huey to be one of their earliest forefathers...<br />
<br />
What an entertainer!....what a band!!....what a gas!!!...what's my name?...<br />
.......the word is Thunderbird....<br />
....Merciful sweet baby Jeeeeesus...that's some good times...even through the hard times.<br />

As a date on the calendar, today marks the anniversary of the passing of a great songwriter and performer whom you've quite possibly not heard of. Fred Neil was one of the early figures in the Greenwich village folk scene of the 60's. The picture above is a shot of Bob Dylan, Karen Dalton and Fred Neil on stage at the <em>Cafe Wha?</em> in 1961. Dylan is the new kid with the harp.<br />
<br />
Knowing that if you are reading this, you can find all the facts, figures and anecdotes you desire by yourself...... I will try not to waste electronic ink or your attention span.<br />
<br />
Fred's life story is somewhat mysterious in the earlier years of his life, but his career goes something like this:<br />
<br />
Penned songs like <em>"Candy Man"</em> and <em>"Come Back Baby".</em> The former recorded by Roy Orbison, the latter, by Buddy Holly. <br />
Wrote <em>"Everybody's Talkin"</em> which was recorded by Harry Nilsson, and, through a roundabout way, eventually selected for the soundtrack to the 1969 film <em>Midnight Cowboy</em>. With the coin this act put in his pocket, Fred didn't have to eat ketchup-and-hotwater-soup anymore. He moved back to his home state of Florida and became the original guy trying to save the dolphins. Literally. <br />
<br />
Fred was also a very talented performer as a singer and guitarist, and he did release some albums of his music - but apparently he didn't place alot of priority on either performing or recording. Enigmatic, reclusive, and now only possibly understood. The recordings of his own music are truly incredible. Fred has a remarkable voice and very capable guitar skills. And although his albums were available to the public, he is more a part of our subconscious via hits that were "covered" by other performers. There is a certain universality to Fred's music that allows it to work for a lot of people. Of particular note is a song called <em>"Other Side To This Life".</em> This one song was recorded by The Youngbloods, Eric Burdon & The Animals, Jefferson Airplane, Lovin' Spoonful, Peter Paul & Mary, Gram Parsons, and Karen Dalton.<br />
<br />
Karen Dalton, is the woman in the above photo, whom I would not have discovered if not for having first stumbled onto Fred Neil. Bob Dylan himself identifies Karen Dalton as his favorite singer. And it's easy to understand why. Her voice is very penetrating. It cuts with clarity like the screeching of tires before the sounds of a dull thud and showering glass. Her story is so very tragic. More of a riches to rags tale. A beautiful young Cherokee woman with angel wings, slapped out of the sky by pain and addiction. Plumetting to the earth as a burning pheonix, to die as junkies die. Her ashes, like Fred's, are sprinkled by the wind into all sorts of unknown places and hearts.<br />

<br />
<br />
My Apologies to the readers! As of late, I have been overseas involved in the testing of some new hybrid sporting automobiles in Germany at the Nurburgring. It was a most stimulating and enjoyable time. I feel fortunate to have experiences like these as they lead me to believe that while science may not solve our problems, it can certainly aide us greatly.<br />
As a result of my absence, I will have to dig into my files to find a past experience to share with you all. You'll need to go back in time with me to November of 2014...there....thank-you for being so kind.<br />
<br />
So here I am in East Van again. Or more specifically, the Down Town East Side. I am standing in front of the Rickshaw Theatre on Hastings Street near Pain...but that's the other side of this life...Or rather, the other side of these velvet ropes. <em>"One of those god-damned homeless people is askin' me for money!"</em> Nah, mes amis....you know I am most not like that!!! But yes, there are a lot of them here in this part of the city. If you ever do visit Vancouver, you really must see the DTES. It has inspired me to such a degree, that I have composed a short poem for those streets and those people.<br />
<br />
Ramble on Babylon,<br />
Trample me in the gravel.<br />
I've been dead for so long now,<br />
I do not mind the travel.<br />
<br />
Oh the things you'll see!!! Believe you me. Why so many homeless in Vancouver? I'll bet the climate is the main factor. Bumming around is far better without frostbite. What faces have I seen? A to Z and all in between. Frank & Earnest, Andy Cap, Mad Max, Nightmare Alice, Nutty Butter, Batty Cracker, Native Son, Missing Daughter. Would you believe that some of these lost souls actually look like the zombies that decorate our popular culture? And this is the reason why homeless people can be referred to as such. So dehumanizing....so fascinating as well...<br />
Blow jobs, lesions, vampire skin, dog-shit-hop-scotch, tweakers, nodders, trannys, and the electric lights of the emergency vehicle orchestra! <em>"Ya dirty 'ol town.....You-oo-dir-ty-o-hol-tow-hown....."</em><br />
<br />
But wait...I am in line to hand over my ticket to see Shovels & Rope, a rockin' folky duo from Charleston N.C. When I first heard them through my electronic sharing circle, I was drawn to something naturally. So naturally, I grabbed a ticket.<br />
<br />
The Rickshaw is a converted movie theatre that has been hosting live music for a number of years. I read somewhere that a good movie theatre conversion is one that keeps the sound insulation installed. I'd be inclined to believe that, as the sound quality would prove to be the only shortcoming of the night.<br />
<br />
The opening act was a hometown son of East Van who goes by the name Rich Hope. He brought a tore-down one-man show intent on having some good rockin' at midnite....and in fact he might have succeeded...but it wasn't midnight...and the room sounded like a concrete box...and we weren't drunk yet. Anyhow, give Rich a listen if you can. He was an excellent choice for the bill and he played his guts out.<br />
<br />
The main feature was, of course, Cary Anne Hurst and Michael Trent aka Shovels & Rope. They make wonderful music through compositional skills, artistry and performance. But there is clearly one particular draw for my ears, and that is the voice of Mrs. Hurst. This is a hardworking duo, and Cary Anne's voice reflects that, as does her personality and resultant stage presence. She is a splash of water. Her voice is powerful. In fact, a member of the audience might believe Cary Anne to be a great lioness. In fact, that same audience member might also believe that the lioness is only batting the audience with kitten paws as she knows her claws are too seriously sharp. Cary Anne has the proficiency of Patsy, the colour of Loretta, the vibrancy of Dolly and the power of Bessie Smith....But wait... I see cold beer in cans....and it's affordable ta' boot!<br />
<br />
After a number of numbers, there was a lot of "Woohoo"ing and that type of thing...my date brought me an extra beer.... I put it in my jacket pocket....and eventually we all fell into this "Hail, Hail, Rock & Roll" number. The correct ratio of alcohol, sweat and hollerin' was in the air. All this led to the solidification of the fifth state of matter, known as <em>"Jukin'",</em> which is a slightly southernized version of <em>"Rockin'".</em> Very similar....it's a subtle difference.<br />
<br />
And all this while, I never did get to hear the clear tones of Cary Anne's voice due to some crumby sound. Seems strange, as I had recently attended a show there that had a fine mix. Anyhow, people didn't seem to care. My impression of the crowd was that they were diverse, but unified in that they knew what they came to hear - some good, honest, soulful music. And they recieved it. I distinctly remember marvelling at how much sweat was dropping off of Michael Trent's head. They were workin' fer sure. And if I wasn't a luddite with an aging cellphone, you might be able to discern the sweat beads within the pixels of that single solitary photo I have. Shovels & Rope make you say to yourself <em>"Yeah, THAT'S what i've been missing..." </em> The crowd was definitely enthusiastic. When we hooted and hollered for an encore, Mrs. Hurst told us all to calm down. Then they laid us low and sent us home. Satisfied and wanting more.<br />

The life of a musician is a tough go. It is often a struggle to make ends meet. This is not earth-shattering news, it is just the way it is for the majority of musicians ( say 90%...maybe 99%). But this is the life we have chosen,and I personally, am not bitter about it. Working a regular job would be a lot harder for me.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

When I was younger and out playing shows, people would ask, "What else do you do?", but now that I'm older, folks can't wrap their head around my life, "How do you do that?". Well, it is like anything else in this world that you want to succeed at : You have to work your ass off!</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

Forget about the countless hours booking shows, promoting your shows, promoting your music, growing your social media presence, rehearsing for shows, performing at shows, driving to shows, radio and television appearances, newspaper interviews...</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

Let's focus on creativity. What goes into making an album?</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
As an original music artist, the first thing you have to do is write the songs. This could take, well, years in some cases. Assuming you want it to be good, taking your time is always a good approach. Of course, some songwriters are more prolific than others. So, let's just say it takes 2 years to write a 10 song album (you'd write more than 10 songs, but it might take 40 songs written to get 10 good ones, or 10 that will fit with the context of the album).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Let's break it down even further. How many hours would that be? Suppose you spend 10 hours a week writing ( and maybe 20 hours a week sitting staring at the blank page), that would be 1040 hours of writing time to get the material together to record on the album.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Then you rehearse the songs to get them to a performance level that is worthy of recording. This can vary depending on the artists. Some folks let things come together in the studio.I'd be one of those artists in a way, but the guys I brought in to play on my latest record were all familiar with each other, and had been performing together for years. So it depends on the situation. That being said, I played most of the songs myself at least 100 times before I brought them to the band. Call it 500 hours.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Recording the album comes next. Again, depending on genre and recording style this can vary greatly. With my latest record, we spent 2 days recording the bed tracks. then 3 months recording overdubs, and mixing the record... How many hours? 100 at least.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Then I listened to record over and over with the songs on shuffle to find the exact order I wanted. To give the album a good flow. 30 hours maybe ( although mostly while I was driving to a gig).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
That's 1670 hours of an artist's life that has gone into one creative project. In most cases, they have not yet made one cent from their efforts.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
This is where you come in.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="line-height: 1.571428em;">Why is it important for you to purchase that album? or T-shirt or Coffee Mug, etc. etc..</strong></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<strong style="line-height: 1.571428em;"><br clear="none" /></strong></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Songs are important. They make us feel things. They bring us together. Think of your local hang on a Saturday night without the band playing. Okay, maybe you're too busy staring at your phone. But imagine no music on your phone streaming at you from those evil-doers over at Spotify. </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none" /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Life would be pretty bleak without music. And that's not likely to happen. But the inability for a professional musician to make a living could drive a lot of talented people out of the business. I'm talking about original music. Cover bands generally get a guarantee, but for musicians touring their original music, a lot of the time their money comes from ticket sales or cover charge( or passing the hat).</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Five bucks a head at the Mansion or the Townehouse doesn't add up to much unless the room is packed. And even then, considering the expense of touring...</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
The point I'm getting at is this : It is up to us. You and I as music fans need to support artists by buying that album they slaved away on for months and years. We need to feed the creative machine. The more we put in to the cycle, the more return we will see because of it.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
If you don't want the cd ( you listen to music on your phone), but you really liked the show, buy a tshirt, or other merch. It's all about supporting the creative process. </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Don't ask the artist if they're on iTunes. If they are anywhere near having their shit together, they are on iTunes. Downloading legally is cool but it is always better to buy something at the show. It helps the musician get down the road. Food in their belly and gas in their car.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
You also walk away with something to remind you of a great evening!</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<br />
A horse of many colours, awash with the showering lights of others. These things have all been seen beneath the skies of Whistler B.C and on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. How can something be in two places at one time? Well, it wasn't. It was the same guy, C.R. Avery, doin' his thing on two different nights in two different locations.<br />
<br />
First delight was a night at Joe's Cafe on Commercial Drive. Picture old gentlemen behind a lunch counter. Big steaming machines, and soup to nuts. Beer in cans. Black velvet prints of matadors from Portugal. Pool tables with table clothes. I'm here to see a show called "Some Birds Walk For The Hell Of It". Parallel to Joe's, and connected through the door in the wall, is the extra room now enlisted as a theatre. It is here that I laughed and cried, felt big and small, felt all and nothing, and nothing at all. I was taken on a journey through pornographic nunneries and city streets paved in rhyme. A pornographic landscape of codpieces and Jelly Rolls. Poetry. Free poetry. Black and white landscape. Crows.<br />
In between the start and the finish, the audience was shown all manner of fantastic songs and rhythms. Dance and movement. Flesh incisions. I received reprieve to my eyes with many appropriate moving pictures displayed on a large screen behind the luxurious stage setting of plywood fantasy. The subject as subject.<br />
I searched the floor for my scattered emotions after seeing a sacrificial effigy of Sinead O'Connor burned in a flame of oxygen and sunlight. All the while he juggled snakes while playing harmonica.<br />
What I witnessed was entertainment. Cabaret. Burlesque. Show biz baby. This is a caravan of must-sees and credit must be given where credit is due: audio/visuals, Blair Bou-skil; burlesque dancers, Melody Mangler and Violet Femme; and the raconteur entrepreneur himself, C.R. Avery.<br />
The curious may satisfy themselves on the interweb @ <span style="font-size: small;"><a href="http://youtu.be/zugHtu0A4k4" target="_blank"></a><a href="http://youtu.be/zugHtu0A4k4" target="_blank">http://youtu.be/zugHtu0A4k4</a></span><br />

<strong></strong><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"><strong> </strong>It is said one might be so lucky as to see seven colours at once as you drive out of town on the sea to sky highway. In casual conversation some days earlier, I had revealed my history of auto racing in Monaco and France. As a result, I had been asked to drive part of the C.R Avery caravan as it pushed north. </span><span style="font-size: small;"> We descended to our destination on the shores of "The Point" on Alta Lake; a charming and warm lodge filled with local inhabitants of the same disposition.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> This night was more straight-up witch doctory than anything. Voodoo Hoodoo. Snake oil y'all. Real deal snake oil with active ingredients guaranteed to make your joints jingle and your toes tingle.</span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> CR molded clay pots on stage and then served berries & cream in them. The hungry ate greedily as he waved a harmonica revolver around. We were served boogie shoe stew. Fresh tunes from old refrigerators and bottomless cups of rhymes. The crowd got up, the dance floor got blisters, the people got high. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: small;"> Once again, the total package of entertainment. Joy, Bliss, sorrow. <em>"You know it, street poet obscene, ridin' in the back of a yellow limousine."</em> What good people, what good times, what a classy and greased band from East Van. The horde barely escaped as the beams crashed to the floor and the moon blew the sky off the mountain. Infact, I clearly heard 'em say as they were leaving <em>"Not a better dollar was spent!"</em></span><br />

Rabid Ear Music asked the band's guitarists, Adam Weaver and Chris Wood, about their affinity for the Surf Punk genre among other things.</div>

<i><b>Rabid Ear</b></i> - Why Surf Music? </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<i><b>Adam</b></i> - I've always gravitated to the more modern sounding takes on surf (Los Straitjackets, Man Or Astroman, Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet etc.) and I had a few riffs I compiled over the years, and wanted to see how it would actually sound. Figured maybe we would do a handful of shows, maybe an EP recording, and here we are coming up on four years together this June.<br />
<div style="border: 0px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<span class="im" style="line-height: 1.571428em;"></span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<i><b>Chris</b></i> - <span style="line-height: 1.571428em;"> I grew up listening to it, my Dad was a big fan of groups like The Tornados, The Shadows, The Beach Boys... So it was ingrained in my head, Then moving to Southern California for 10 years and being around it's birthplace gave it a sentimental feel for me and connected it to a time and place. When we got together it was to jam as a surf band and see what happened... As you can hear we've got some surf elements to the music but I'd hardly call it "traditional" style surf, way more I dunno, loud and rockin'?</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<i><b>Rabid Ear</b></i> - What is the writing process like? Is it a full band collaborative effort?</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<b><i>Adam</i> </b> <span style="line-height: 1.571428em;">- Pretty collaborative yes. One of us may come in with a riff, maybe a change as well. A skeleton of an idea we all flesh out. Since it's not really a singer/songwriter thing where one of us is like "I Wrote a song, and it goes like this..." , we are all open to throw our ideas back and forth.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.571428em;"><b><i>Chris</i> </b>- It varies quite a bit. Sometimes when we're warming up at a practice we'll wind up messing around and before you know it, a new riff is born! And if we can't use it or frankenstein-it into another riff/song at the time we log it away in our riff-bank. Other times one of us will show up with an idea for a song, and jam on it as a group and see what happens, sometimes it works out, other times... not so much. We've all had ideas for songs that haven't quite made the cut, but we usually spend time trying to work through them. I find it easier for myself to bring a riff to the table and build off of it as a group.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<i><b>Rabid Ear</b></i> - Has anyone ever frowned while at one of your shows? I don't see that as being possible.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<i><b>Adam </b></i> <span style="line-height: 1.571428em;">- Well, that time we stole candy from the small children at our show, they were frowning big time :). But for serious, we think it's important to entertain your audience, especially if they come out on a work/school night in possibly bad weather, and we wanna do everything that will convince them the trip was more than worth it.</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span style="line-height: 1.571428em;"><i><b>Chris</b></i> - ...I'm not entirely sure of a frown....I've seen some pretty confused and shocked looks that's for sure, but that goes hand in hand with getting on stage in matching jumpsuits preceded by a pair of go-go dancers wearing luchador wrestling masks, bright blue shiny capes and either grass skirt or bikini. Also heading back to your 1st question, sometimes people are confused as to why there's no vocals, so that draws a few inquisitive looks during the set, as does a guitar playing attempting to play a guitar solo with a machete...</span></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 21.9999923706055px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<span style="font-size: large;">You are out on the town. Looking for excitement. Looking for something to make the night come alive. You walk into a nondescript looking pub because you hear the hustle and bustle, and the undeniable rhythm. Music. Freshly created by the performer and delivered to your ears. Something is happening here. Boys, let's order us a round! </span></h1>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

That is the power that live music has. It is transformative. Whether you are out looking for a good time, or if you are in a contemplative, even mournful mood, there is something unmistakable about the places that a live performance reaches that canned music doesn't.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">

Sure, it is fun to hear a song on the radio, and get up and dance, but it doesn't carry the same weight as a live band playing in front of you. The auditory sensation.The visual.</div>

Are we slowly losing our way? People don't go out to see bands like they used to, it has been said by many. Are we content to live our lives in our little boxes watching our giant TVs and surfing the internet? Or is it the cost of going out and ordering that $7 pint (god forbid you have to pay a cover!)? </div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none"></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
I started playing the bars at the tail end of the "glory days" of live music. We would play from Wednesday through to Saturday (with a matinee on Saturdays) sometimes. Almost always we played Friday AND Saturday night at the same venue! Can you believe it? And there were people in the bar! Sure, there was a lot of cigarette smoke, and barroom brawls, and cocaine flying around, but talk about atmosphere. You were a part of something.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none"></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Now all that's left are the young kids and their cocaine. We need to change that. Maybe it means venues putting on earlier shows for folks who don't want to wait until 1:00 AM to show up at the bar after they partied at home all night. I've seen matinees and early shows (7-10pm) work. With the population getting older it just makes sense.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none"></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
But while the venues are catching up with the societal change, you old-timers just need to suck it up and take a nap.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br clear="none"></div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #383838; font-family: gotham, helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.571428em; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
There are many excuses not to go out. But those of us who live and die by music (whether musician or music fan) know how important live music is for local culture and community. Organizations are always looking for bands for their fundraisers. Why? Because without music there is no sense of "Hey, there's something going on here.". But in order for a band to be good, they have to work at it, and in order to really hone their craft, they have to get paid, and in order to get paid, they need a bar to hire them, and in order for the bar to hire them, the bar needs to see a benefit financially. These dots connect. Music and art do not exist in a vacuum. They require an audience.</div>

History Of A Common Man continues Savage's exploration of Folk, Country, and Americana genres. From the teenaged lament of Skinny Kid to the under-medicated psychotic ramblings of Take The Wheel And I'll Steer, from the road-weary musician in Rougher On Me to the tear-drenched Country of All Over You, History Of A Common Man finds its stories in people who live on the margins. Outsiders looking for their place in the world.</div>

It's been a long time coming. Savage's last solo studio record was Never Shed No Tears way back in 2006. A lot of songs have been written since that record was released, and now it is time to share some of them with the world.<br />
<br />
You can help Tom with funding his new record by heading on over to <a href="https://www.sellaband.com/en/projects/tom-savage">Sellaband</a> and making a contribution. Anyone who buys a part of the album will receive a hard copy of the record, as well as a download copy of the new Foley Mountain Playboys album which is set for release in May of this year.tomsavagemusichttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16488301059668078109noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2366298349921645123.post-15135107733383287392013-11-24T09:12:00.001-08:002013-11-24T09:12:46.499-08:00Foley Mountain PlayboysFrom Tom Savage's Blog :<br />

<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;">Fiddle player Kevin Davidson's country home, on the outskirts of The Outlet, was the perfect setting for us to lay down tracks for what will be the debut record of The Foley Mountain Playboys. Keeping it simple, we just set up all in one room and ran through the songs...well, maybe it wasn't quite that simple, but I'll spare you the technical details. Anyway, we are all excited about what we were hearing through the headphones, and can't wait to make these songs available to you.</span><br style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;" /><br style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;" /><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="-webkit-box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392) 1px 1px 5px; background-color: white; border: 1px solid rgb(241, 241, 241); box-shadow: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392) 1px 1px 5px; color: #545454; float: left; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px; margin-right: 1em; padding: 1px; position: relative;"><tbody>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif;">The band has definitely developed a sound, and for what it lacks in subtlety, it makes up for in sheer locomotive force.
